The Great Embankment - 1911 Blowout The Erie Canal crosses the Irondequoit creek east of Rochester. The gully created by that creek had to be built up with fill because it was impractical to use locks there. The canal's tendency to leak in filled-in stretches like this prompted the use of a concrete liner along this entire section; but it wasn't enough to prevent a major blowout in 1911 during the Erie's modern "Barge Canal" enlargement (1905-1918).
